You can remove a steering column in a reasonable time with appropriate patience and attention to method. Please follow the steps below to avoid the most common errors with this type of work.
Disconnect the Battery First
First remove the negative terminal connection from the battery and allow 15 minutes for the airbag system’s capacitor to discharge. Then you can proceed with the removal of the steering column.
Remove the Airbag and Steering Wheel
First locate the Torx bolts that hold the airbag to the steering wheel hub centre. Once removed the airbag can be removed and laid face up to work off. The steering wheel centre nut should then be released and the steering wheel pulled off and marked for re-fitting.
Take Off the Column Shroud
Upper and lower plastic shroud halves that cover the steering column usually are held with 2 or 3 screws underneath. After removal of these screws both shroud halves can be separated and lifted off from the steering column.
Disconnect the Wiring Connectors
Remove the plugs for the indicators, wiper stalk, ignition switch and for the clock-spring wires. Pull the plugs out of the column. Make sure you press the release tabs fully before pulling them off. They can break easily if you force them.
Unbolt the Column from the Bracket
Loosen off the bolts holding the column to the dashboard support bracket (usually found inside the footwell).

Release the Intermediate Shaft
Loosen the pinch bolt holding the steering column to the intermediate shaft and pull back the column spline. Pull the steering column back in the cabin to ensure it doesn’t fall.
Remember to work carefully at every stage and the job should be relatively easy to complete.
