The above causes can often be “sorted” over time but they will eventually cause more problems than they are worth. We have therefore detailed the 5 most common causes of a noisy Vauxhall Corsa steering column.
Worn Column Bearings
The upper and lower column bearings support the steering shaft of your car’s steering column. The upper bearing is housed within the steering column upper column tube whilst the lower bearing is situated within the steering column lower column tube. Both bearings can wear dry or corrode and cause a grinding or clunking noise when the steering lock is turned fully. This type of wear is often worse when the car is first started and the grease has thinned overnight.
Worn Universal Joint
The Universal Joint is located half way along the steering shaft. The Universal Joint enables the column to change angle. The knock of a worn or damaged Universal Joint is worst at low speed under steering and is heard when pulling away from a junction for example with the wheel on partial lock.
Faulty Clock Spring or Wiring Contact
The clock spring is a coiled electrical contact inside the column hub. As this wears or develops cracks in the foil, it can start to click or grind when the wheel is turned – regardless of speed. These types of problems are frequently mistaken for worn mechanical bearings.
Loose Column Mounting Bracket
The steering column mounting bracket to the inner structure of the fascia is typically a bolted affair using a rubber isolator to insulate any vibration. Over time the bracket may work loose or the rubber may deteriorate allowing the column to knock against the fascia. The knocking is most pronounced over rough roads and at speed bumps when the steering wheel is returned to the central position.
Spline Coupling Wear
Worn spline coupling: – A worn spline coupling at the base of the steering column shaft will produce a dull clunk on slow turns i.e. when parking. As speed increases the noise will disappear, only to return on slow turns.
